UK capital receives mobile broadband upgrade

Central London is soon to experience a significant boost in mobile broadband connectivity.

Specialist telecoms companies Ontix and EE are installing new equipment throughout the City of Westminster in the capital. The all-new miniature mobile broadband masts will support 4G but also 5G traffic, enhancing the dependability and high-speed connections of London’s leading mobile network in a key business location.

The collaboration between Westminster City Council, Ontix and EE is an indication of a dedicated effort to improve digital infrastructure in London. It will ensure that the City of Westminster, which provides a base for over 50,000 enterprises and millions of tourists every year, stays at the cutting edge of innovations in mobile broadband connectivity.

Referred to as “small cells”, the diminutive masts have been engineered specially for deployment on London lampposts to provide focused network coverage in specific zones where mobile connectivity is in high demand. The project’s targeted design will improve capacity in many of the capital’s busiest areas and answers the issues that Westminster’s concentrated urban setting poses.

The network apparatus has been considerately painted, so that it blends seamlessly with London’s streetlights, mitigating aesthetic impact while optimising functionality. The method also avoids the area becoming cluttered with extra hardware by using the existing posts for mounting.

Councillor Geoff Barraclough of Westminster City commented that he was proud that the council was working to enhance connectivity with EE and Ontix for all those who dwell, work and visit the London business hub.
