Starlink to ramp up roll out broadband in Britain

Recent statistics have revealed that Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet solution, has increased deployment of broadband services in the UK.

The figures showed that satellite broadband use had more than doubled, led by SpaceX’s Starlink, which has achieved a total of 87,000 connections – predominantly in rural areas.

While it is among the more expensive options for high-speed internet connections, the solution has been praised for its ability to help residential and business users get online in the most remote parts of the country.

Starlink operates via a constellation of low orbit satellites to transmit internet data. The satellites are connected to a network of dedicated ground stations, which connect to the internet. Each Starlink user has a special dish installed on their property, which can both send and receive signals from the satellites that are wired to a Wi-Fi router, sharing connection.

The satellite internet offers many advantages over conventional broadband solutions. For example, it is entirely independent from local telecoms infrastructure, which means it doesn’t have to rely on cabling, wiring or landlines. It is also resilient against even the most extreme weather. It can withstand, sleet, snow, harsh winds and heavy rain with signals never interrupted.

Here in the UK, Starlink has excellent coverage. It is available almost everywhere on the mainland, save for some remote parts of northernmost Scotland. Businesspeople in rural parts of the UK that full-fibre hasn’t yet reached can use Starlink for remote working, video calls and other key processes.
