Latest data drives Welsh broadband rollout
Enterprises based in Mid Wales areas like Powys and Ceredigion are now being urged to use fresh data to help introduce faster broadband services to the area they operate in.
The Government has made updated technical data available on broadband coverage that can help policymakers and broadband suppliers map out future improvements.
Growing Mid Wales is a regional partnership that represents the two Welsh local authorities of Powys and Ceredigion. The two local governments are also referred to as the “Mid Wales Corporate Joint Committee”. The Government stated that while the recently released information is not targeting the public, it is a key step in making sure that more businesses and homes enjoy access to gigabit-capable broadband going forwards.
County Councillors for Powys and Ceredigion commented:
“While the newly released data is mainly for technical use, it’s another step in tackling broadband gaps across Mid Wales. Reliable, high-speed internet is essential for businesses and communities, and we encourage residents to check if they can benefit from gigabit broadband support.”
As a result, ministers are now urging businesses to get informed on their present broadband status using the Openreach “Fibre Checker”. The digital tool will let companies see if there is gigabit broadband available in their area via a fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) build plan.
The Government is also suggesting that residents and businesses check if their property or premises resides within a “Voucher Priority Area”. Some parts of Mid Wales, like Cardigan, Maesycrugiau, Newcastle Emlyn and Llandysul qualify for broadband vouchers funded by the Government. Community Fibre Partnerships are currently expanding coverage in Powys.
