Why is my PC making loud noises?
A loud desktop computer can be distracting when you’re trying to work, but it can also be a tell-tale sign that a device is struggling to operate effectively. Here, we look at some common causes of noisy PCs, along with ways to resolve the issue.
Problems with the fan
Dust pulled into desktops can clog air vents and fan blades. Adequate airflow is therefore impacted, making fans work harder to cool computer components – making them noticeably noisier.
When a PC has poor ventilation or is under a heavy load, it can generate excessive heat. This also triggers fans to run faster, increasing noise.
When a fan’s bearings become damaged or worn, rattling and grinding noises can also occur.
To prevent this, keep your work area as dust-free as possible, and keep vents clear of debris to mitigate issues. Ensure machines have access to sufficient ventilation. Computers can be opened and fans cleaned or replaced if necessary, but if you don’t feel confident in carrying out the task, consult an IT professional.
Stray component issues
Vibrations or manufacturing errors can cause internal components to come loose from their secure fastenings. This can result in them vibrating against the housing, creating noise.
Makes sure your device is on a level surface to prevent unnecessary vibrations. You can open you PC and see if any components are loose and refasten them into place. Again, if you need aid, consult an IT engineer.
Hard drive problems
When a computer’s hard drive becomes outdated, it can start to fail. Grinding and clicking noises can occur as the drive accesses data.
Outdated hard drives in older machines can be upgraded to a quieter and newer solid-state drive (SSD).
