Vodaphone launches synchronous 2.2Gbps broadband

Britain’s fastest broadband is now officially provided by Vodafone.

As part of Project Gigabit, the UK Government’s agenda to connect underserved parts of the country, the new service runs exclusively using the CityFibre network.

The Government programme supplies subsidy to widen full fibre broadband rollouts so they encompass business and homes across rural parts of the UK, including places that might previously have missed out on the latest upgrades and speeds.

Vodaphone’s first customer to connect to the network is now receiving the internet service provider’s all-new, synchronous 2.2 Gbps service, which offers identical upload and download speeds. Based in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester, Josh Newman commented that his work involved dealing with large files that demand a quality connection.

When he and his wife are working at home simultaneously, their connection also had to handle online research and video conference calls, making it a high usage household.

Consumer Director for Vodafone UK, Rob Winterschladen, commented:

“Project Gigabit is a game-changer for rural communities, who can now enjoy the same full fibre benefits of gigabit speeds and improved reliability as those living in cities. Whether it’s for work, education, entertainment or socialising, our customers can do more of what they love online.”

Chief Operations Officer for CityFibre, Simon Holden, added that the company was thrilled at the first customer connection.

The landmark connection is a milestone of great importance for CityFibre. It is presently rolling out its full fibre networks, offering speeds of up to 10 Gbps to around 465,000 harder-to-reach businesses and homes via Project Gigabit.
